Weekend trip to North Lincs & East Yorks. 11-13 June 2011
We paid a visit to North Lincolnshire on Saturday June11th 2011 and our first visit on arrival was to Normanby Hall Gardens. The house was once in the Sheffield family, former Dukes of Buckingham.
It is now run by the North Lincolnshire Council as a country park. The Estate covers 300 acres, which includes a Victorian walled garden with fruit and vegetables and has been developed under the guidance of Sue Hoy.
Sunday 12th june we visited Burton Agnes Hall in the East Riding of Yorkshire, a superb Elizabethan House and grounds -
a plant fair was being held in the grounds
Later that day we visited two garden in Hessle which is not far from the Humber bridge. Rain just starting to pour down but most are grateful for it but as they are gardened by members of The Hardy Plant Society nobody reallly minds and after the very dry spring it is more than welcome.
Monday 13th June our first visit was to The Garden House, Saxby, near Market Rasen. The 8 acre garden has been developed by ChrisNeave and Jonathan Cartwright since 2002. It has many features such as a terraced garden, Dutch pergola, oblelisk garden, ponds and a dry garden - a huge variety of styles creating much interest.
Later the same morning we visited the plant nursery and gardens at Hall Farm, Harpswell which this weekend included an exhibition of sculptures and garden related stalls
Our final visit in Lincolnshre is the grounds of Aubourn Hall, near Lincoln. The 5 acre garden contaied mature tree, shrubs and mixed borders. The old Elizabethan house is not open to the public.
