Fergus Garrett's talk about gardening at Great Dixter, in E.Sussex, was one of the most informative we have ever had. It has taken Linda three years to get a date when he could come to Norfolk, and this was a magnificent end to her five years as our Chairman.

Fergus has an extensive background in horticulture, and a huge enthusiasm for his subject.He showed us how the gardens are kept, how some have been the same for many years, and some changed each year, either completely or partially, based on the results from the previous year.

He told us how you can grow self-sowing annuals, even cow-parsley, and avoid the inevitable by ruthlessly chopping off their heads when the first seeds start to set. Colours can be pastel, or loud, or a mix, but must show texture in the planting, and scale in the sizes and shapes, with a comfortable intermingling, so that the scheme appears anchored, but draws the eye through it. The pile of toning shirts, (belonging to Christopher Lloyd, with the one zingy yellow, epitomised their method of planting a cohesive scheme, but with a bit of life in it.

The arrangement of pots and containers around the front door of Great Dixter was one of my favourite things. I saw this some years ago and have tried to emulate it, but it's not so good on a smaller (and less well-managed) scale, especially as my front door faces North. It's still a wonderful goal to aim at, and the pictures were a wonderful reminder. I think he encouraged all of us to get into the garden as soon as the frost allows, and I am sure many of us would love to visit or renew our acquaintance with the garden.

Fergus advised that we should visit during midweek as he is not usually available at weekends. Linda is back on visits duty, and will be looking into the possibilities.
